The Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii naso), known as Karrak to the Noongar people, is one of the South West’s most iconic birds. These striking cockatoos are recognised by their powerful beaks, dark plumage, and the brilliant flash of red tail feathers in the males.
They live in the old-growth Jarrah, Marri, and Karri forests of Western Australia, where they feed on seeds from native trees. Sadly, loss of habitat and hollow-bearing trees has made them endangered, but their presence remains a powerful symbol of the South West’s wild forests.
